Shoujo-Ai! nn But... what does that mean actually?

Shoujo-Ai is a manga/anime related term, Japanese and means "girl love".
You might know Manga and Anime as Comics drawn with this common Japanese style: those typical big eyes, the shape of the face and a very realistic impression the characters give.
Japanese Mangas have a wide range of topics, they may be very serious, complex, sad or even sexy.

Shoujo-Ai means Mangas, that are about lesbian love. Stories about feelings, the problems and the daily life lesbian love bears. You might think such Mangas just appear in a small number. But that is not true. There does exist a very wide range of them, not just about Lesbians, even Gays or other kinds of love.

(Actually the term Shoujo-Ai does not exist as name of a Comic Genre in the Japanese culture. It was introduced by Americans to describe Comics about Lesbian Love like the existing name "Shounen-Ai" describes Gay related Manga in Japan. The word Shounen means "boy". So it was clear to choose the Japanese word for Girl for the opposite Genre wich is "Shoujo". Especially in Europe Shoujo often is witten as Shojo which is because of the two possible transcriptions of the Japanese language. However, Shoujo is the more common version especially in english. "Ai" by the way means "love" ;)
In Japan people don't use the term Shoujo-Ai as we do. Even if lesbian love Manga are more popular in Japan they are called "Yuri" there for multiple reasons: The first Manga containing lesbian love used them only as side plot. For any reasons many Characters that appeared there had the name "Yuri". This name became a well known term for Manga about Lesbians. The term for Gay Stories Manga was Yaoi.
Those where primarily made for adults and contained much sex stuff.
In the young Japanese history there also appeared Manga about Gay relationships that where different because they focused on a younger readers (if we think of Gravitation for example), especially on girls as readers. Usually Manga for Girls are called Shoujo, the Yaoi Manga that focused more on the characters feelings and banned sexual contents got well known as Shounen-Ai. The name Shoujo-Ai could not prevail over Yuri for the less popular Lesbian Genre.)

What is Shoujo-Ai.com about and who is it for?

We are a Web Community that started as Site about Shojo-Ai Manga, but with the years our main focus has grown.
Of course we still offer many things about Lesbian Love Manga and Anime, and we are one of the worlds most popular sites on this topic.
Today we're a Web Community about Lesbian Love, Friendship and primarily a big Family of members, no matter if girls or boys, who are the reason why we run this site even if it's sooo expensive (Thank you Keito :)

We are absolutely Non Profit and wanted to create a place where people can find friends, talk about love and get help if they need it.
In 2006 we started also with an own Dating Service and many nice Stuff about Love and Lesbian Love. We also offer a new Gallery where you can view loads of Pictures, Fan Arts and also present your own pictures and get comments on them.

There is much to visit and view, and we hope you give us a chance and get part of our project. We support all kinds of love and think that love needs no restraints. This is a place where you can talk, get advice and help other people that may e in same situations that you are or where.
